For most tests, yes — a GP or specialist referral is standard and often required for Medicare rebates. However, some panels (including certain STI screens and genetic tests) can be self-requested. Our assessment will tell you exactly where you stand within 60 seconds.
Routine blood panels: 24–48 hours. Pap smears and cervical cytology: 3–5 business days. Tissue biopsies (histopathology): 5–7 business days. Urgent frozen sections for intraoperative decisions: same day, often within the hour. Every result comes with a written plain-language summary.
Samples are processed, analysed, and stored according to strict laboratory accreditation standards. Tissue blocks are retained for a minimum of 10 years — this matters if you need a second opinion or future comparative analysis. Blood samples are disposed of safely after reporting. You can request details about your specific sample at any time.
Your referral form (if you have one), your Medicare card or private health card, and a list of any current medications. For fasting blood tests, arrive having not eaten or drunk anything except water for 8–10 hours. We'll send you a personalised preparation checklist after you complete the readiness assessment.
Results are released to the requesting clinician first — this is a patient safety standard, not a gatekeeping measure. Your GP or specialist will typically contact you within 24–48 hours of receiving the report. If you haven't heard back within 3 business days, call our patient liaison line directly.
Yes. Our laboratory holds NATA accreditation (National Association of Testing Authorities) and participates in external quality assurance programs. Every pathologist on staff is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (FRCPA). Accreditation details are available on request.
An abnormal result is not a diagnosis — it's information. Our pathologists add a clinical context note to every out-of-range finding. Your referring clinician will interpret results in the context of your full history. For results requiring urgent attention, we contact the referring doctor directly on the same day.
